Lesson 3 of 3 · Ecology and living systems

Observe biodiversity

Suggested time: 15–25 minutes

The idea

Biodiversity includes variety within species, among species, and across ecosystems. A small survey records only what you can detect in a particular place and time. Observation methods affect results. Treat organisms gently and leave habitats as you found them.

Worked example

A five-minute garden count may miss nocturnal animals or tiny organisms. Finding more visible species in one plot does not establish its total biodiversity without comparable sampling.

Another application

One plot with 20 ants and two plant species has at least three observed organism types in this simple count. A plot with fewer individuals may still contain more observed species. Record both measures distinctly.

A common misunderstanding

Counting individuals and counting species answer different questions. Ten individuals of one species do not represent ten species.

Try it yourself

Observe two safe outdoor areas for equal periods. Record visible organism types without collecting them. Compare methods and limitations.

Check your understanding

Does not seeing an organism prove it is absent?

Reveal the explained answer

No. It may be hidden, inactive, seasonal, or difficult to detect.
